2013 UCI Road World Championships

I chose this photo because I am a fan of sports and specifically cyclism. This photo was taken last week in Florencia, Italia. Indeed, there were the UCI Road World Championships. There were a lot of cyclists and 52 nations were represented!! The race, 272 kilometers, was very difficult because of the rain and the route.

On this photo, we can see the new world champion, Rui Costa. This man is the first Portuguese to win the Rainbow jersey. On his right and on his left, there are two Spanish cyclists, Joaquim Rodriguez and Alejandro Valverde. The three boys on the podium are very famous. Rui Costa won 2 stages of the Tour de France in July 2013, but he also won the Tour of Switzerland in 2012 and a lot of other races… Joaquim Rodriguez, looks very sad on the photo. He has a great prize list but he often fails at the second or third place. This year, he was third in Paris at the end of the Tour de France. In 2012, he finished at the second and at the third place respectively at the Giro and the Vuelta, Italian and Spanish races but he can also win when he wants especially at The Flèche Wallone and the Giro di Lombardia, both in 2012. Rodriguez failers close to the first place could explain his tears when he received his silver medal. And last but not least, Alejandro Valverde. He is 33 years old and already 5 UCI Road World Championships medals. This is a huge performance for a cyclist! He also finished 5 times on the podium of the Vuelta and won Liège-Bastogne-Liège or the Flèche Wallonne for example.

The race this Sunday was very amazing. Everybody thought men as Fabian Cancellara, Philippe Gilbert or Peter Sagan will win the race. But at the end of the race, we could observe that 4 outsiders (the 3 on the photo and Nibali, an Italian) ran before the expected winners. Finally, Rui Costa was the best of all the participants and won the gold medal to write his name in the history of cyclism.
